Unhappy with their success at banning smoking in all workplaces and restaurants throughout Louisiana, the powerful anti-smoking lobby in Baton Rouge is now trying to take away your right to smoke in bars.

Such a law goes too far in stripping away your freedom. As adults we are perfectly capable of deciding for ourselves whether or not we want to patronize bars that allow smoking. We do not need the government treating us like children by taking this choice away.

Write to the House and Senate today to fight back against the anti-smoking lobby’s attempts to strip you of your freedom. Call on these legislators to keep the government from meddling in your private lives and tell them to vote down or amend the proposal to ban smoking in bars.

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support an amendment to SB186 filed by Sen. Rob Marionneaux, to exempt hookah lounges and cigar bars. Traditional uses of tobacco are culturally important and should not be banned. This bill to ban smoking in all bars that serve food is simply going too far. Bar patrons, business owners, and employees should be free to choose for themselves whether to participate in a smoking environment. The government has no right to step in and decide what is best for everyone. We the people should be able to decide for ourselves. Furthermore, this bill would cause financial harm to Louisiana businesses already struggling in these dire economic times, resulting in the loss of much-needed jobs and tax revenue. Any consideration of a bill that does NOT provide an exception for the cultural uses of tobacco, does a great disservice to Louisiana’s Middle Eastern minority community. This community has been completely left out of any discussion regarding the smoking ban despite the important role of hookah smoking to their heritage. By ignoring this tradition the Louisiana legislature shows great contempt for the culture of Louisianans of Middle Eastern descent. Such scorn is simply not acceptable, and we urge our legislators to allow for cultural exceptions to any proposed smoking ban.
